Program information

General program goals

  1. Graduates will demonstrate high ethical standards and understand the importance of professional development.
  2. Graduates will be able to perform as an entry level radiographer.
  3. Graduates will be able to communicate, problem solve and critically think.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of the program the graduate will:

  1. Demonstrate high ethical standards as outlined by the ARRT Rules and Regulations and Standards of Ethics.
  2. Use oral and written medical communication.
  3. Demonstrate knowledge of human structure, function and pathology.
  4. Anticipate and provide basic patient care and comfort as well as utilize Universal Precautions.
  5. Apply principles of body mechanics.
  6. Perform basic mathematical and computer functions.
  7. Operate radiographic imaging equipment and accessory devices.
  8. Position the patient and imaging system to perform radiographic examinations and procedures.
  9. Modify standard procedures to accommodate for patient condition and other variables.
  10. Process images.
  11. Determine exposure factors to obtain diagnostic quality radiographs with minimum radiation exposure.
  12. Adapt exposure factors for various patient conditions, equipment, accessories and contrast media to maintain appropriate radiographic quality.
  13. Practice radiation protection for the patient, self and others utilizing the ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle.
  14. Recognize emergency patient conditions and initiate first aid and basic life-support procedures.
  15. Evaluate radiographic images for appropriate positioning and image quality.
  16. Evaluate the performance of imaging systems, know the safe limits of equipment operation, and report malfunctions to the proper authority.
  17. Demonstrate knowledge and skills relating to quality assurance.
  18. Exercise independent judgment and discretion in the technical performance of medical imaging procedures.
  19. Be eligible to sit for the examination administered by the American Registry for Radiologic Technologists.

The program has been accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology, (JRCERT). The student is eligible upon completion of the program, to take the National Registry Examination of the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists and upon passing the Registry Exam to use the designation R.T. (R)(ARRT).

Radiation safety and pregnancy policy

It is the policy of The King’s Daughters’ Hospital School of Radiologic Technology to practice and monitor “radiation safety” for all employees and student radiographers. The American Society of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT),states that customary radiation safety practices for pregnant radiation workers shall be followed. In order to adhere to the guidelines of the National Council of Radiation Protection and Measurements, (NCRP), and the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT), a pregnancy policy has been created for this program and is available per applicant request and is included in the policies of the Radiology Student Handbook.

Tuition & Books

The fee for tuition is $3,000.00 per year, payable July 1 of each school year. All students shall purchase the necessary books for the 24 month program through King’s Daughters’ Hospital for a fee of $1300, payable on or before July 1 of their first year.

Refund policy

A 100 percent refund of the first year tuition and books will be granted if the student decides to withdraw from the program on or before the first day of the school year. A 75 percent refund of the first year tuition and books will be granted if the student decides to withdraw from the program within the first four weeks of the first school year. No refunds will be granted after the fourth week.

Financial aid

The King’s Daughters’ Hospital School of Radiologic Technology does not participate in financial aid programs. The cost of tuition and books are the responsibility of the student. All fees are due on the first full day of class for both first and second year students.

Transfer/part time or advanced placement

The King’s Daughters’s Hospital & Health Services School of Radiologic Technology does not accept transfer, part time or advanced placement of students.

Outside employment

Employment outside the Program is permitted as long as the student maintains a good scholastic record and notifies his/her employer that hours change from day to evening and that assignments includes Saturday and Sunday rotations. Students are expected to regard their education as first priority, regardless of the hours of the outside job. Student schedules are posted at least two weeks in advance, and are easily accessible to all students.

Dress code

  • Uniforms: color coded with the Radiology School—clean and neat.
  • Stockings or socks.
  • Name tag and film badge.
  • White leather or vinyl shoes—clean shoes/shoestrings.
  • Fingernail polish—clear or very pale color. Chipped polish shall be removed.
  • Hair may not fall below shoulder unless tied back. It shall be neatly combed and clean.
  • Jewelry is not permitted while in uniform except for rings (two per hand) and earrings (two per ear) of modest design and appearance. Earrings must be of post-type or small hoop no larger than a diameter of 1/4 inch.
  • Nail length—Natural nails shall be kept short (no more than 1/4 inch in length of white portion of nail). Clean and well manicured. Artificial nails are not permitted.
  • Perfume and cologne shall not be worn by student radiographers.
  • Watch with analog or digital seconds capability.
  • No visible tattoos.
  • Facial hair such as beards, mustaches or sideburns must be neat, clean and well-trimmed. No “scruff.”
